"Brain Gym"

(Reactive)

(Responsive)

"Thinking Mind is a Stress Machine"

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space lies our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

Mindfulness & Meditation: Observing Mind vs. Thinking Mind

Why does Meditation hold such a vital place in the practice of Mindfulness?

Mindfulness teaches us how to correctly face the unavoidable ups and downs of life. It builds mental resilience and empowers us to move forward. Meditation, in turn, is the foundation that supports this mindful living.

Just as we go to the gym to train our bodies, we must train our brains. Meditation is essentially building your "Mindfulness Muscle." Think of it as a "Brain Gym."

In reality, meditation is neither difficult nor mystical. it is simply sitting quietly and observing your mind and body. It is the act of watching your physical sensations, thoughts, and feelings without reacting or judging them. It is the practice of doing nothing.

When you distance yourself to observe your thoughts and emotions without trying to react—simply knowing they are there—that is meditation.

Observing Mind vs. Thinking Mind: What’s the Difference?

The Thinking Mind: This part of the mind analyzes, criticizes, judges, and plans what to do next.

The Observing Mind: This part lives directly in the present moment by simply watching the flow of thoughts and feelings.

We train the Observing Mind through meditation.

Imagine sitting on a riverbank watching the waves; that is the Observing Mind. If you jump into the water and get swept away by the current, you have entered the Thinking Mind.

The Observing Mind leads to Pure Awareness. It is like the sky—vast and steady. Thoughts and emotions are like clouds or the weather, constantly changing and passing through. The Observing Mind watches the thoughts but does not drift away with them. It knows exactly what you are feeling, yet it doesn’t judge or "fan the flames" to make things worse.

Reactive vs. Responsive

The Thinking Mind is Reactive: It wants to react instantly.

Example: "He said this to me, so I’m going to say that back!" (An automatic, knee-jerk reaction).

The Observing Mind is Responsive: It thinks with awareness before solving a problem.

Example: "He said that... I should consider how I ought to respond." (A mindful, chosen response).

Reactive is reacting automatically without awareness; Responsive is choosing the right reaction with mindfulness.

The Trap of the Thinking Mind

When an emotion arises, the Thinking Mind multiplies it.

Example: You feel anger. The Thinking Mind then fuels that anger: "He said this to me. He thinks I'm lazy. I can't believe he doesn't trust my work. He's so selfish. I'm going to tell him off right now!" The Thinking Mind fans the flames of emotion to provoke a reaction.

Another Example: Suppose you didn't get a job you applied for. You feel disappointment and anxiety. The Thinking Mind starts working: "I'm totally useless. I never get what I want. If I don't get this job, I'll never survive."

These thoughts feel true, but they aren't fully accurate. They are reactive thoughts born from a lack of mindfulness. They feed a "negativity bias," showing you a dark future rather than reality. Remember: "The Thinking Mind is a Stress Machine."

The Power of the Observing Mind

The Observing Mind looks at the event as it is. It gives the feeling space. It watches where that feeling lives in the body. Like turning down the heat on a boiling kettle, it reduces the intensity of heated emotions.

It doesn't just watch feelings; it observes the surrounding environment—the sound of the wind, the sight of green grass. In that moment, your focus shifts from a narrow "bad spot" to a wider perspective. Instead of seeing your stress as a giant black cloud covering your whole life, you see that "black spot" as just one small part of a much larger canvas.

As the Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist Viktor Frankl famously said:

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space lies our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

Summary

To live mindfully, we must train the Observing Mind. To keep our reactions right and our "mental clutter" clear, we need to be aware at all times. And to strengthen that mindfulness muscle, we need Meditation.

By combining Mindfulness (effort in every moment) with Meditation (dedicated time for practice), you will find your Authentic Self.

You will begin to see your own mental clutter and the habits you need to change. Just as a sculptor removes excess wood to reveal a beautiful statue, these practices will clear your heart, making it purer and more beautiful every day.
